Damage from Hurricane Ike

Where do we even begin? Sunday morning we received a call from my midwife saying that the birth center has power and if we needed to we could stay there. We decided to attempt to get back home and just see how bad things were. So we packed up the car and said our goodbyes to Grandma and Grandpa and we were on our way. Things were fine, but when we started seeing the trees uprooted and broken and tipped over and we were only about an hour south of Dallas we became a little nervous. There are tons of pictures and you will have to go to older posts at the bottom to even see them all.

We are fine. We ended up staying at our house and our power came back on Monday night and then it flipped off again. We were a little frustrated with that, but then it came back on a couple hours later. We were in that 6% that got it back on. We have AC which is very nice since heat and 9 months pregnant do not go well together. However, even though our fridge works, there isn't milk or eggs or meat available to us in the stores. We are getting by fine however. Our friends went out of town and just got back in today and brought with them milk, bread, and meat. They will probably be staying with us for quite a while until it is safe to go to their house. So we will be fine for a few more days. Gas stations are crazy. Some are open and each day new ones open up, but it doesn't really help because some are also closing because they run out of gas. Devin waited in line for gas for our Envoy but they only allow you to get $30 at a time, which is nothing for our Envoy. Luckily our Pontiac is pretty much full to get us by. Devin still hasn't gone to work because his office is in North Houston and they still don't have power.

But enjoy and I will try not to leave too much out. The pictures explain most everything anyway though.

This was about 1 hour south of Dallas!

North of Houston power already out and gas stations limited. Lines were forever long and most of them didn't even have power.

As we came into Houston traffic came to a stop. Of course they weren't letting anyone Downtown yet so we had to go around the city. Just as we came to this point, Addie became car sick and puked all over. What a joy that way to clean up. We luckily were able to get off on a side road and clean things up.

No. That isn't a building under construction. Most of the shingles had been ripped off.

The closer we got to Houston the more traffic we saw leaving Houston. We were saying, "Why are you leaving?" and they were probably saying, "Get out and stay out while you can."

This is the sign we first saw as we got off at our exit. Not too bad we thought until we saw our neighborhood.

Apparently something went right through that sign.

Telephone poles leaning in.

A few uprooted trees at the church, but otherwise in good shape.

A trampoline that was lifted over the brick wall behind it and places directly on top of this tree.
